Nigerian comedian, Emmanuel Ejekwu, popularly known as Sabinus, has revealed that his father once dismissed his comedy career as “useless” until he started earning enough to support the family.
Speaking in an interview with VJ Adams, Sabinus explained that his father initially wanted him to become a lawyer, a dream that never materialised despite multiple attempts to secure admission.
He eventually settled for Linguistics and Communication Studies at the University of Port Harcourt, where he later discovered his talent for comedy.

The skit maker said it was during his time on campus that he began experimenting with skit making, though it wasn’t financially rewarding at the beginning.
“At first, my dad never wanted me to be what I am today, he wanted me to be a lawyer. I tried my best but I couldn’t secure a law admission. So, I had to settle for Linguistics and Communication Studies at Uniport,” he said.
He added that he kept his comedy journey a secret while in school and even after graduation.
“After I graduated, my dad never knew I was a comedian because I was hiding it. It was one more year after school that he started seeing me on comedy show posters,” he recounted.
According to him, his sisters confirmed to their father that he was into comedy, a revelation that sparked anger.
“He was very furious. He fumed, ‘Which comedy? Stupid business. Look at the boy I sent to become a lawyer,’” Sabinus recalled.
The comedian noted that his father’s disapproval gradually faded as he began to make money from comedy and started assisting him financially. That was when his father finally accepted his career path.
Sabinus added that the support he now enjoys from his family motivates him to keep growing in the entertainment industry.
