‘Nigerians are hypocrites,’ Phyna defends BBL surgery after sister’s loss, shades VDM

Big Brother Naija Season 7 winner Ijeoma Otabor has called Nigerians hypocrites while defending her decision to undergo a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL) and 360 liposuction months after the death of her sister, Ruth Otabor.

She also used the livestream to respond to social commentator VeryDarkMan over ongoing online criticism linked to the incident.

Speaking during an Instagram livestream on Saturday, Phyna said people had no right to judge her choices or how she chooses to grieve.

“I have to say most Nigerians are hypocrites,” she said.

The reality star recently went viral after sharing a video confirming she had undergone cosmetic surgery, writing: “Finally did it. No regrets.”

Addressing criticism linking the surgery to her sister’s death, she insisted her grief is private.

“I don’t grieve my sister online. She will always remain in my heart,” she said.

She added that she does not believe in displaying personal pain on social media.

“But one thing people will never see is me come online to cry and post that I miss my sister,” she said.

Phyna also warned critics not to involve her late sister in online arguments.

“Don’t try to bring my sister’s death into this… it is none of your damn business,” she said.

She further dismissed claims by VeryDarkMan that she received ₦1 billion from the Dangote Group in relation to her sister’s case.

“When a person says they gave me one billion, I did not do the BBL for that… it is disgusting,” she said.

On her surgery and public reactions, she remained unapologetic and said she is embracing her new look despite criticism.

“People should use all their weapons now. Small, small. I am coming,” she said.

Ruth Otabor died on August 31, 2025, after sustaining severe injuries in a road accident involving a Dangote truck near Auchi Polytechnic in Edo State.

She had been receiving treatment after the August 13 crash before passing away from complications.

Before her death, the Dangote Group covered her medical expenses and planned further treatment abroad.

The case had earlier triggered online exchanges between Phyna and VeryDarkMan over allegations she has repeatedly denied.

The livestream has since sparked mixed reactions online, with supporters defending her choices and critics questioning her timing.
