New year: Gunmen attack Police station in Ondo

Residents of Ipele in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State were thrown into fear on Wednesday night, December 31, 2025, after suspected bandits attacked the community’s police station.

Eyewitnesses said between 20 and 30 armed men entered the area at about 9:40 p.m., firing gunshots that sent residents and police officers running for safety.

The attackers reportedly headed straight for the Ipele Divisional Police Headquarters, where they fired assault rifles, used explosives, and later set the building on fire.

Several exhibits and properties inside the station were destroyed. The police command, however, said no deaths have been confirmed.

Reacting to the incident, the Ondo State Police Command, led by Commissioner of Police Adebowale Lawal, condemned the attack and confirmed the destruction of the police facility.

In a statement, the command dismissed claims circulating on social media that a church was attacked, describing the reports as false. It added that investigations are ongoing and more details will be provided as they emerge.

Security operatives from the police, military, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and other agencies were deployed to the area shortly after the attack.

Residents recounted how gunshots and explosions forced many people to flee into nearby bushes for safety. Community leaders and families have called for increased security presence as investigations continue.

Authorities have launched a manhunt for the attackers and urged residents to cooperate with security agencies to help restore calm in the community.
