Plateau gov, Mutfwang, joins APC

The All Progressives Congress has announced the defection of Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, from the Peoples Democratic Party, marking a major political shift in the North Central region.

The APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yelwata, disclosed the development on Thursday during the party’s 14th national caucus meeting held at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja. According to him, Plateau gov joins APC, a move that now places all states in the North Central zone under the control of the ruling party.

Governor Mutfwang was elected on the platform of the PDP in the 2023 general elections and becomes the latest high-profile governor to leave the main opposition party for the APC, further strengthening the party’s political dominance ahead of future elections.

Yelwata said the defection signals growing confidence in the APC, noting that Plateau gov joins APC at a time when the party is consolidating its hold across the country.

During the meeting, the APC chairman also announced the commencement of the party’s nationwide electronic membership registration exercise. He gave January 30, 2026, as the deadline for all members to complete their registration, stressing that the initiative would promote transparency, improve data integrity and strengthen internal democracy.

He urged party leaders and stakeholders to mobilise both old and new members to participate fully in the exercise, explaining that registration would prepare the party for upcoming congresses and other internal activities.

The caucus meeting was attended by President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, leaders of the National Assembly and former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo. Several APC governors, including recent defectors from other parties, past governors and top party officials were also present.

With the latest development, Plateau gov joins APC, further underscoring the ruling party’s expanding influence across Nigeria’s political landscape.
