23-year-old wins China’s ‘lying flat’ contest after staying still for 33 hours, takes home $550

A 23-year-old man won a “lying-flat” competition in Baotou, Inner Mongolia, after remaining on a mattress for over 33 hours, highlighting a growing trend among young people choosing low-stress lifestyles.

The contest, held on November 15 at a local shopping centre, required participants to lie on a mattress continuously without getting up, though they could read, use their phones, or eat while lying down. Many wore diapers to avoid elimination, which occurred if they left the mattress. Out of roughly 240 participants, only three remained after 33 hours.

In the final round, contestants were asked to lift both arms and legs simultaneously. The winner credited his girlfriend for keeping him motivated. “I hadn’t prepared specially and felt like giving up several times, but thanks to her support, I kept going and won,” he said.

The top three finishers received cash prizes of 3,000 yuan ($550), 2,000 yuan ($370), and 1,000 yuan ($185), respectively.
