Police to resume enforcement of tinted glass permit January 2

The Nigeria Police Force has announced that it will resume enforcement of tinted glass permit regulations nationwide from January 2, 2026, citing rising security concerns and the need to protect lives and property.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Force said the decision to resume enforcement of tinted glass permit followed a review of criminal activities linked to the use of vehicles fitted with unauthorised tinted windows.

The Police clarified that the ongoing court case on the matter did not at any time restrain the Force from enforcing existing laws. However, enforcement was temporarily suspended to allow motorists sufficient time to regularise their documentation and complete the registration process without undue pressure.

According to the statement, recent intelligence reports indicate that criminal elements have increasingly exploited vehicles with illegally tinted glass to conceal their identities while carrying out crimes such as armed robbery, kidnapping, and other violent offences. As a result, the Police said it had become necessary to resume enforcement of tinted glass permit as a proactive security measure.

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, assured the public that the renewed enforcement would be carried out professionally, with respect for citizens’ rights and in line with extant laws. He reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to public safety and the rule of law.

Motorists who require tinted glass permits have been advised to apply through approved channels and ensure their vehicles comply with legal requirements ahead of January 2, when the Police will resume enforcement of tinted glass permit across the country.
