UEFA bans Prestianni for six matches over discriminatory conduct

UEFA has handed Gianluca Prestianni a six-match suspension following a disciplinary ruling over discriminatory conduct during a UEFA Champions League clash against Real Madrid.

In a statement on Friday, UEFA said the sanction relates to conduct deemed homophobic, with three of the six matches suspended for a two-year probationary period. The punishment includes a one-match provisional suspension the Benfica winger has already served.

The incident occurred during the February encounter between Benfica and Real Madrid, which was briefly halted after tensions flared on the pitch. Prestianni was accused of making offensive remarks toward Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior.

While initial reports suggested a racial slur, further clarification during proceedings indicated the comments were homophobic in nature. Prestianni denied making racist remarks, maintaining that his words were misinterpreted.

UEFA also confirmed it will request that FIFA extend the suspension globally.

Benfica acknowledged the decision, noting that of the three-match effective ban, one has already been served, with the remaining two to be completed in UEFA competitions or applicable international fixtures.
