UCL: 10-man Barcelona lose to Atlético Madrid at home

FC Barcelona suffered a 2-0 home defeat to Atlético Madrid in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarter-final on Wednesday night.

The result leaves Barcelona with a tough job in the return leg in Madrid.

Barcelona started well and controlled the early stages of the game.

But everything changed late in the first half when defender Pau Cubarsí was sent off after a VAR review for a foul on Giuliano Simeone.

From the resulting advantage, Julián Álvarez scored a brilliant free-kick to give Atlético the lead before half-time.

Barcelona tried to respond after the break, but playing with 10 men made it difficult.

Coach Hansi Flick made changes in midfield, but Atlético stayed solid under Diego Simeone and controlled the game.

The visitors sealed the win late on when Alexander Sørloth finished a low cross from Matteo Ruggeri to make it 2-0.

Barcelona will now need a strong performance in Madrid to stay in the competition.
