Barcelona beat Atletico Madrid, fail to qualify on aggregate

Barcelona beat Atletico Madrid 2-1 on the night but were knocked out of the UEFA Champions League after losing 3-2 on aggregate.

Barcelona started fast, with Lamine Yamal and Ferran Torres scoring early to cancel out Atletico’s first-leg lead.

But Ademola Lookman pulled one back for Atletico before half-time — a goal that proved enough to send them through.

Barcelona pushed for a third goal but could not find it.

Their hopes faded further when Eric Garcia was sent off late on for fouling Alexander Sorloth.

Atletico held firm to reach the semi-finals, where they will face either Arsenal or Sporting Lisbon.

“It was a rollercoaster with us going 2-0 down,” Lookman said. “We stuck in there, and we got through to the semis.”

Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong said his side were unlucky. “We played a very good match. We gave it our all,” he said.

“I have the feeling that luck wasn’t on our side.”
