Nigeria’s dream of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup ended in agonising fashion on Sunday, as they were knocked out by DR Congo in Rabat after a 1–1 draw and a tense 4–3 defeat on penalties.
The Super Eagles struck early: just three minutes into the match, Frank Onyeka intercepted slack defending and fired home to put Nigeria ahead.
But DR Congo responded decisively in the 32nd minute when Meschack Elia, released by a quick break, slotted in to level.

After 120 hard-fought minutes, neither side could force a winner. Extra time brought fatigue and tension, and eventually the result hinged on a penalty shootout. DR Congo remained composed when it mattered most: substitute goalkeeper Timothy Fayulu, brought on just before penalties, made two crucial saves, while Nigeria faltered, with Calvin Bassey, Moses Simon, and Semi Ajayi missing key kicks.
Captain Chancel Mbemba stepped up to calmly convert the decisive penalty, sending the Leopards into the intercontinental playoff and sealing Nigeria’s fate.
In the aftermath, DR Congo coach Sébastien Desabre praised his players’ mental strength under pressure.
For Nigeria, it is a bitter pill: despite a bright start and spells of dominance, their World Cup journey ends once again in heartbreaking fashion.
