Men caught competing in women’s race at the Two Oceans Marathon in Cape Town were disqualified after officials uncovered a bib-swapping scheme, with results cancelled and disciplinary action pending.

South Africa: Two men caught competing in women’s race at marathon

Two men have been disqualified after competing in the women’s category at the Two Oceans Marathon in Cape Town.

Officials said Luke Jacobs and Nic Bradfield finished seventh and 10th in the women’s race on April 12. Their results were later cancelled after it was discovered they used bibs assigned to female runners.

The case came to light after race data and finish-line checks showed a mismatch in results. Further checks confirmed the bib swap.

Race official Stuart Mann said the matter has been referred for discipline.

“Not only is it considered unethical, but it also poses health and medical risks in case of an emergency, as wrong medication may be administered to a wrong person,” Mann said.

He added that the issue involved the use of other athletes’ race numbers.

The investigation also traced one of the bibs to Larissa Parekh after social media photos showed Jacobs wearing a bib with her name.

“I made an error in judgment and did not consider the consequences. I should not have taken part,” Jacobs said.

Officials also confirmed Bradfield used a bib belonging to Tegan Garvey, who said she gave up her entry after suffering an injury.

“The day before, my hip gave in completely, leaving me unable to even walk. I felt bad as to give up my race entry so my friend ran in my place,” Garvey said.

Both women involved have apologised and may face further action, including possible bans.
