Liverpool striker, Isak, suffers fractured ankle

Liverpool striker Alexander Isak has undergone surgery after suffering a fractured ankle during Saturday’s 2-1 Premier League win over Tottenham Hotspur, the club confirmed on Monday.

The injury occurred as Isak scored Liverpool’s opening goal, with his foot caught under Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven’s legs while the defender attempted to block the shot.

“Alexander Isak today successfully underwent surgery on the injury he sustained on Saturday,” Liverpool said in a statement. “After diagnosis, an operation was completed today on an ankle injury that included a fibula fracture. No time frame (is) yet placed on his return.”

The 26-year-old Sweden international joined Liverpool from Newcastle United in September for a British record £125 million ($168 million). He scored 54 Premier League goals in 86 appearances for Newcastle but has struggled to find form at Anfield, netting just two league goals in 10 appearances and failing to score in the Champions League.

With Mohamed Salah away at the Africa Cup of Nations, Liverpool will lean on striker Hugo Ekitike, who has scored eight league goals this season. Isak’s absence may also influence the club’s plans in the upcoming January transfer window.
