A fire outbreak on Thursday afternoon destroyed eight shelter rooms and a mosque after a fire guts Yobe checkpoint along Gombe Road in Potiskum Local Government Area of Yobe State.
One military personnel sustained injuries in the incident, which was first noticed around 1:30pm when thick smoke billowed from the area.
Eyewitnesses said residents and security personnel raised the alarm immediately, but efforts to contain the blaze were initially unsuccessful as the flames spread rapidly across the shelter area.
According to them, the intensity of the inferno worsened the damage before emergency responders arrived, further confirming how the fire guts Yobe checkpoint within a short time.

Confirming the incident, the head of the Local Emergency Management Committee of the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency, Ahmad Daya, said emergency teams responded swiftly and eventually brought the fire under control.
He added that the injured military officer was evacuated for urgent medical attention, while relief efforts were being coordinated for those affected by the fire guts Yobe checkpoint.
Preliminary findings suggest the fire may have been caused by an electrical fault, although investigations are ongoing. No fatalities were recorded.
