Abba Abubakar, son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has formally announced his decision to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), as Abba defects from PDP to align with President Bola Tinubu’s political vision.
The defection, which took place on Thursday at the National Assembly in Abuja, marked a major political shift as Abba pledged his support for Tinubu’s second-term ambition in 2027.
Popularly known as Abba, the younger Atiku was received into the APC by the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, alongside other party leaders from the North-East.
Party officials described the move as a significant realignment, noting that Abba defects from PDP at a time of increasing political mobilisation ahead of the next general election.
Speaking at the event, Abba announced his resignation from the PDP and declared his commitment to working with the APC to promote President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
He also directed members and coordinators of his political structure, formerly known as the Haske Atiku Organisation, to immediately join the APC and support the ruling party nationwide.
Welcoming him, the APC National Vice Chairman (North-East), Mustapha Salihu, described the development as symbolic and far-reaching, adding that it reflected a new era of politics driven by ideology rather than personal background. He assured Abba of equal opportunities within the party.
Senator Barau Jibrin, in his remarks, congratulated Abba for what he described as a bold and principled decision, stressing that Abba defects from PDP based on belief in President Tinubu’s leadership and reform agenda, not family influence.
The event climaxed with the renaming of Abba’s political group to the Haske Bola Tinubu Organisation, signalling full political alignment with the APC and renewed commitment to Tinubu’s second-term bid.
