BREAKING: Court sets Nov 20 for verdict in Kanu’s terrorism trial

A Federal High Court in Abuja has fixed November 20, 2025, for judgment in the terrorism trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Justice James Omotosho announced the date on Friday after Kanu again refused to open his defence, insisting there was no valid charge against him.

The judge noted that the defendant had been given “ample opportunity” to defend himself but chose not to.

“Having failed to utilise the opportunity granted to him, the defendant cannot claim to have been denied fair hearing,” Omotosho said.

Kanu, who earlier dismissed his legal team, maintained that his continued detention by the Department of State Services (DSS) was unlawful and that the charges against him were unconstitutional.

“There is no written law in Nigeria establishing terrorism as an offence,” he argued, citing Section 36(12) of the 1999 Constitution.

During Friday’s proceedings, Kanu complained he had not been allowed to file a new motion. The judge ordered the court registry to be temporarily relocated to the courtroom to enable him to complete the process.

In the motion, Kanu asked the court to strike out his not guilty plea and nullify all previous proceedings, claiming he was “deceptively arraigned” in violation of his constitutional rights.

Prosecution counsel Adegboyega Awomolo said he would not respond to the new motion, opting instead to rely on existing exhibits before the court.

Justice Omotosho said all pending motions and objections would be addressed in the final judgment.

The case was thereafter adjourned until November 20 for verdict.
