Brazilian midfielder, Casemiro, to leave Man United this summer

Manchester United have confirmed that Casemiro will leave the club when his contract ends this summer.

The 33-year-old joined United from Real Madrid in 2022 for £70 million and made 146 appearances. He scored in the 2023 Carabao Cup final, helping United win the trophy.

Casemiro’s future became uncertain after new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe criticised parts of the squad. Ratcliffe told BBC Sport last year that some players were ‘not good enough’ and ‘overpaid’, comments widely linked to senior squad members.

In a statement, Casemiro thanked the club and said he is still focused on helping United finish the season strong.

“I will carry Manchester United with me throughout my entire life,” he said.

“It is not time to say goodbye; there are many more memories to create during the next four months.”

“We still have a lot to fight for together,” he added.

“My complete focus will, as always, remain on giving my everything to help our club to succeed.”

Simon Stone, Manchester United reporter for BBC Sport, said the club decided not to extend Casemiro’s contract some time ago.

Stone added that the decision was partly due to Casemiro’s high wages, which Ratcliffe has criticised publicly.

Casemiro was signed after United missed out on other midfield targets like Frenkie de Jong and Declan Rice.

He struggled in his second season but has improved this year under coach Ruben Amorim. Casemiro has started most of United’s Premier League games this season.

Casemiro can now talk to other clubs about a move after the summer, and United will look to sign new midfield players.
