AFCON 2025: CAF fines Algeria $95,000, suspends players for misconduct in Nigeria clash

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has fined Algeria $95,000 and suspended two players over misconduct during and after their quarterfinal defeat to Nigeria at AFCON 2025.

Nigeria beat Algeria 2–0 to end their campaign in the tournament.

In a statement on Wednesday, CAF said the sanctions followed actions by Algerian players, officials and supporters that “brought the game into disrepute”.

CAF fined the Algerian Football Federation $25,000 for improper conduct by players and officials. Another $5,000 was added for a post-match brawl.

Supporters were also cited for unruly behaviour. CAF imposed a $50,000 fine for offensive gestures toward match officials, $10,000 for an attempted pitch invasion, and $5,000 for the use of smoke.

CAF described the fans’ actions as “offensive and abusive”.

Two players were also punished. Goalkeeper Luca Zidane received a two-match ban for a physical clash with Nigeria midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru. He will miss the opening games of the 2027 AFCON qualifiers.

Right-back Rafik Belghali was handed a four-match suspension, with two matches suspended, for threatening match officials.

The Algerian Football Federation said the sanctions were unfair and confirmed it would appeal.

CAF said it will continue to act firmly to protect the image of African football.
