‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ crosses $1bn in global ticket sales

Avatar: Fire and Ash has crossed $1 billion in global ticket sales, marking another major box office milestone for director James Cameron and the blockbuster Avatar franchise.

Walt Disney Studios said on Sunday that the science-fiction epic has earned about $1.03 billion worldwide since its release, buoyed by strong performances across international markets after opening with $345 million at the global box office. The film is the third instalment in the Avatar series and returns audiences to the visually immersive world of Pandora.

Picking up from Avatar: The Way of Water, the story follows Jake Sully, played by Sam Worthington, and Neytiri, portrayed by Zoe Saldana, as they deal with personal loss while facing new challenges.

“These movies consistently draw audiences to the movie theater,” said Paul Dergarabedian, Comscore’s head of marketplace trends, adding that the franchise’s immersive 3D format is “tailor made” for cinema audiences.

Disney said the film has grossed $306 million in the United States and Canada, with international markets contributing $777.1 million.

The Avatar franchise has now generated more than $6.3 billion globally, underscoring Cameron’s long-standing box office appeal, which dates back to Titanic, his first billion-dollar release.
