APC founded to tackle poverty, boost security — Tinubu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said the All Progressives Congress (APC) was created to drive national transformation, with a focus on reducing poverty, improving security, and rebuilding Nigeria’s institutions.

Speaking at the party’s 4th Elective National Convention in Abuja, Tinubu stated that the APC was not formed solely to win elections but to deliver effective governance and promote national development.

He said the party was built by Nigerians committed to creating a country where institutions work efficiently, opportunities are accessible, and citizens can live with dignity regardless of their background.

Reflecting on its formation, the President noted that the APC emerged from a collective resolve to pull Nigeria out of economic decline and reposition it for growth and stability.

Tinubu described the convention as a defining moment for the party to reaffirm its ideals, strengthen unity, and recommit to its founding vision under the theme, “Unity in Progress: Consolidating the Renewed Hope Agenda.”

The President dismissed claims that the APC is pushing for a one-party state, stressing that democracy depends on credible opposition and healthy political competition.

He also criticised continued opposition to the proposed Electoral Act 2026, describing the attacks as harmful to Nigerians and democratic progress.

On his administration’s reforms, Tinubu admitted that the road to economic recovery has been difficult but necessary, noting that tough decisions are essential for long-term national prosperity.

He said his government chose reforms over sustaining policies that are no longer viable, adding that “no economy grows by sustaining wasteful subsidies or dysfunctional priorities.”

Despite global economic pressures, including the impact of the US-Israel-Iran tensions, the President said his administration has made progress in key sectors, especially infrastructure, with ongoing investments in major road projects and superhighways.

Tinubu expressed confidence that the sacrifices Nigerians are making will lead to lasting economic gains and a more stable future.
