Senegal will observe a nationwide pause today (Monday) after President Bassirou Diomaye Faye declared a paid public holiday to allow citizens to celebrate the country’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) victory.
The declaration followed celebrations across the country on Sunday night after the Teranga Lions defeated host nation Morocco 1–0 in the AFCON final played in Rabat.
The win handed Senegal their second AFCON title and further confirmed their place among Africa’s leading football nations.
According to ABC News, celebrations broke out in the capital, Dakar, immediately after the final whistle.

Fireworks filled the sky as streets became crowded with cheering supporters. Fans waved Senegal’s green, yellow and red colours, danced, and sang into the night.
The final was closely contested and extended into extra time, where Pape Gueye scored the decisive goal to secure victory for Senegal.
The match was marked by tense moments, including crowd unrest and a brief walk-off by Senegalese players following a disputed penalty decision late in the second half.
Sunday’s victory is Senegal’s second AFCON crown, following their first win in 2021 when they defeated Egypt on penalties.
The result underlines the team’s sustained success in African football.
Addressing the nation on public television, President Faye praised the players’ effort and commitment.
“The joy is indescribable,” he said. “We saw men on the field, patriots fighting for our honour. This victory belongs to the lions, the coaching staff and the entire Senegalese people.”
To honour the achievement, President Faye announced Monday as a paid public holiday, allowing nationwide participation in the celebrations.
He also pledged financial rewards for the national team in recognition of their performance.
