Jonathan, Obi, others hold closed-door talks on 2027 opposition alliance

Former President Goodluck Jonathan and ex-Anambra State Governor Peter Obi on Monday held a closed-door meeting as part of ongoing political consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The meeting, which drew key opposition figures, was disclosed by the mobilisation wing of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), known as ADC Vanguard, through posts on its X handle.

According to the group, the discussions were “high-level” and centred on the possibility of opposition parties presenting a single presidential candidate in the next election cycle.

Obi was accompanied by a delegation that included Igbo elders, ADC senators from the South-East, and other political associates.

The latest engagement comes amid Obi’s ongoing consultations across the country and growing talks of a potential alliance with former Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, both prominent figures within the ADC coalition.

The development also follows a recent national summit of opposition political parties held in Ibadan, Oyo State. The high-profile gathering was hosted by Governor Seyi Makinde and chaired by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, with notable attendees including Atiku Abubakar, Kwankwaso, Rotimi Amaechi and other opposition leaders.

In a communiqué issued at the end of the summit, participants resolved to form a united front against the ruling APC, oppose what they described as moves toward a one-party state, and work towards presenting a consensus presidential candidate for the 2027 elections.
