Seun Kuti and Very Dark Man honour Fela with traditional rites at his gravesite, following his historic Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.

Seun Kuti, Very Dark Man honour Fela at gravesite

Seun Kuti, son of Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti, and social media activist VeryDarkMan visited the late musician’s gravesite at the New Afrika Shrine/Kalakuta Republic in Ikeja, Lagos.

They performed traditional Yoruba rites, including the sacrifice of two rams and pouring libations of gin and beer, to honour Fela. VeryDarkMan shared the moment online, writing: “Respect to our Ancestors.”

The visit comes amid debates after Wizkid claimed he had surpassed Fela, drawing criticism from Seun and fans.

Fela was recently honored with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, becoming the first African artist to receive the prestigious recognition.

Social media reactions were mixed. Some praised the tribute. User @Sirken5 said: “A powerful gesture. Seeing the younger generation honor the source of the sound at Kalakuta is necessary for the culture. Respect to the legend!”

Others questioned the ritual. @Josephi61965574 asked: “Shey Fela náh Deity now?” while @AmbroseXchange added: “Is Fela now a god? What’s all these worshiping?”

Still, many acknowledged Fela’s lasting influence. @DuboisCrypto wrote: “Honoring legacy in a way rooted in culture and tradition. Fela’s influence still runs deep.”

The visit shows how Fela’s legacy continues to inspire new generations, decades after his passing in 1997.
