Snake bite: FMC Abuja breaks silence on Ifunanya Nanyah’s death

The Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Jabi, Abuja, has responded to public claims surrounding the death of fast-rising singer Ms Ifunanya Lucy Nwagene, popularly known as Nanyah.

Nanyah reportedly died on January 31, 2026, after complications from a snake bite. News of her death quickly sparked reactions online, with some social media users alleging that the hospital lacked anti-snake venom and handled her case poorly.

In a statement issued on February 1, FMC Jabi denied the allegations, describing them as false and misleading.

The hospital said Nanyah was attended to immediately upon arrival at the emergency unit. According to the management, medical staff began urgent treatment without delay, including resuscitation, intravenous fluids, oxygen support, and the administration of polyvalent anti-snake venom.

The statement explained that doctors carried out a rapid assessment and found that she had already developed severe neurotoxic complications from the snake bite.

Plans were made to transfer her to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for advanced care, but her condition suddenly deteriorated before the move could be completed.

Despite intensive efforts by the medical team, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), she could not be revived.

FMC Jabi maintained that claims about the absence of anti-venom or negligence by its staff were untrue, stressing that standard emergency procedures were followed throughout.

The hospital also expressed sympathy to Nanyah’s family and loved ones, while reaffirming its commitment to transparency and quality healthcare.

“The claims of non-availability of anti-snake venom and inadequate response are unfounded and do not reflect the reality of the situation,” the statement said.
