Nnamdi Kanu Georgia honorary citizenship

IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu honoured with Georgia citizenship

Georgia honorary citizenship has been conferred on the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, by the U.S. State of Georgia.

This was disclosed on Friday by Kanu’s younger brother, Prince Nnamdi Kanu, who shared a proclamation letter declaring the IPOB leader an honorary citizen of Georgia.

Kanu has been in prison in Sokoto State since being convicted of treason-related charges by the Federal High Court in Abuja. He has rejected the judgement and vowed to appeal.

The proclamation letter, signed by the Georgia Secretary of State, Brad Raffensperger, read, “I, Brad Raffensperger, Secretary of State of the State of Georgia, do hereby proclaim Nnamdi Okwu Kanu as an Honorary Georgia Citizen.

“May this Outstanding Citizen be afforded every courtesy as a Goodwill Ambassador from Georgia in his travels to other states, to nations beyond the borders of the United States of America, or wherever he may hereafter travel or reside. Thank you for your service to our State.

“In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed the seal of my office. office, at the State Capitol, in the City of Atlanta, this 16th day of January, A.D. 2026,” the letter said.

The proclamation letter was received by the former Nigerian ambassador to South Africa, Uche Ajulu.

The development marks another international recognition for the IPOB leader, with supporters describing the Georgia honorary citizenship as symbolic despite his continued detention in Nigeria.

Prince Nnamdi Kanu said the honour reflected growing international awareness of his brother’s situation, noting that the Georgia honorary citizenship was formally documented and issued by the Georgia Secretary of State.
