Court rejects Nnamdi Kanu’s request for transfer from Sokoto prison

Federal High Court in Abuja has denied an application by Nnamdi Kanu, leader of IPOB, seeking a transfer from the Sokoto Correctional Centre to a facility within the Federal Capital Territory or Nasarawa State.

Kanu, represented by the Legal Aid Council, had filed an ex-parte application requesting the move to enable him to pursue his appeal more effectively.

Justice James Omotosho ruled that such a transfer could not be granted without hearing from the Federal Government first. He directed that the ex-parte application be converted into a motion on notice so that all parties could be served for a fair hearing. The hearing for the motion has been scheduled for January 27, 2026.

The decision highlights that the court will not act unilaterally on matters concerning custodial transfers, reinforcing the rule of law. The judge’s ruling effectively denies Nnamdi Kanu transfer at this stage while ensuring due process is followed.

Supporters of Kanu had called for the transfer to facilities closer to Abuja, citing health concerns and the need to access legal representation. However, the court emphasized that all such requests must go through proper channels, reflecting the principles guiding Nnamdi Kanu transfer matters.

As the case progresses, legal teams are expected to present detailed arguments on why the transfer should be granted, keeping the spotlight on Nnamdi Kanu transfer requests and the judiciary’s careful handling of custodial issues.
