Michael Carrick confirmed as Manchester United interim manager

Manchester United have reached an agreement with Michael Carrick to take charge of the team on an interim basis until the conclusion of the current campaign, with an official announcement expected shortly.

The update was revealed by leading transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, who disclosed that the deal had already been verbally sealed since Monday and has now been completed, including arrangements for Carrick’s technical crew.

The former United midfielder is set to assemble a trusted backroom team, which is expected to feature a former Manchester United striker as part of his coaching setup.

Romano confirmed the development on social media, writing:

“Michael Carrick signs in as new Manchester United caretaker manager until the end of the season. Verbal agreement since yesterday, now sorted in all details + backroom staff also. #MUFC official announcement to follow next,”

Carrick steps into the role at a decisive stage of the season following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim. The club’s board is banking on his experience to stabilise the dressing room and help guide the team through a turbulent spell as they attempt to rescue their season.

This is not unfamiliar territory for the 44-year-old. He previously handled the team on an interim basis in 2021 after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer departed, recording two wins and a draw in three matches before handing over to Ralf Rangnick.

Carrick is widely respected within Old Trafford, having spent 12 years at the club as a player and winning major honours including five Premier League titles, the Champions League, FA Cup and Europa League.

His deep knowledge of Manchester United’s culture and expectations is believed to have strongly influenced the club’s decision to turn to him once again.

His immediate challenge will be to lift team spirit, improve performances and ensure United finish the season as strongly as possible, while the club continues its search for a permanent manager ahead of the summer.
