Nick Reiner, the son of renowned Hollywood director Rob Reiner, has been charged with murdering his parents following their deaths at their Los Angeles home.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said Reiner is facing two counts of first-degree murder, with a special circumstance allegation of multiple murders. Prosecutors also alleged that a knife was used in the killings.
If convicted, Reiner could face life imprisonment without parole or the death penalty. Hochman said prosecutors have not yet decided whether to seek capital punishment.
“He will be brought to court to formally face charges and enter a plea after he is medically cleared by prison officials,” Hochman said.

The charges were filed two days after Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, were found dead in their Brentwood residence with multiple stab wounds. Authorities said autopsies are still pending to determine the exact cause, manner and time of death.
Reiner, 32, was initially expected to be arraigned on Tuesday, but the hearing has been postponed to a later date.
Los Angeles Police Department Chief Jim McDonnell described the case as deeply distressing. “This case is heartbreaking and deeply personal, not only for the Reiner family and their loved ones, but for the entire city,” he said.
Rob Reiner directed films such as This Is Spinal Tap, Misery and A Few Good Men. Michele Singer Reiner was an actress, photographer and producer, and the founder of Reiner Light.
Authorities said the investigation remains ongoing as they await autopsy results and court proceedings.
