Nick Reiner, 32, the son of Hollywood actor and filmmaker Rob Reiner, has been arrested on suspicion of killing his parents after they were found dead at their Los Angeles home over the weekend, authorities said Monday.
The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed that Nick Reiner was taken into custody Sunday night and “booked for murder” at the county jail, where he is being held without bail. Police said he had a history of substance abuse.
Homicide detectives are scheduled to present the case to the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office on Tuesday to determine whether formal charges will be filed.
Rob Reiner, 78, known for directing films such as When Harry Met Sally… and The Princess Bride, and his wife Michele, 70, were discovered dead at their Brentwood home on Sunday afternoon. “The investigation determined that the Reiners were the victims of homicide,” the LAPD said, adding that their son “was responsible for their deaths.”

Reports from the Los Angeles Times and TMZ indicate that the couple’s daughter was the first family member to find their parents’ bodies.
Nick Reiner had openly discussed his struggles with drug addiction and periods of homelessness. In a 2016 interview with People magazine, he revealed that he first entered rehab at age 15 and went through treatment at least 17 times.
Those experiences were part of the inspiration for Being Charlie, a film co-written by Nick and his father. “It was the most personal thing I’ve ever been involved in,” Rob Reiner told podcaster Marc Maron in 2016.
Local reports suggest that Nick Reiner was seen in a dispute with his parents the night before the incident at a holiday gathering hosted by comedian Conan O’Brien.
