Angry protesters have stormed Nepal’s parliament and set the building ablaze following violent demonstrations over a controversial social media ban and deep-rooted government corruption.
Ekram Giri, spokesman for the Parliament Secretariat, confirmed on Tuesday that “hundreds have breached the parliament area and torched the main building.”
The unrest began after the government moved to ban 26 popular social media apps and messaging services, a decision that triggered a wave of anger across the country.

Although the ban was lifted after several days of chaos, the damage had already been done. At least 19 people have been killed and more than 200 others injured since the protests erupted on Monday.
The demonstrations, led mostly by young Nepalese under the banner of the “Gen Z protests,” reflect growing frustration over corruption, unemployment, and the government’s perceived failure to deliver economic opportunities.
As the crisis deepens, several ministers have reportedly resigned from their posts, fueling uncertainty about the government’s stability.
The Nepal parliament fire protests mark one of the most significant challenges to the country’s political establishment in recent years, raising concerns of further instability if dialogue with protesters is not urgently pursued.
