Yemi Osinbajo

VIDEO: Osinbajo recounts life-changing moment he decided to stop drinking alcohol

Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has opened up about the personal experience that led him to give up alcohol, sharing the story in a video that surfaced online on Tuesday.

In the clip, he spoke candidly about his past habits, noting that he occasionally took red wine and beer despite being a pastor.

“I like my red wine once in a while, and then I like my beer,” he said.

He went on to describe how a routine outing during his time in Somalia turned into a defining moment. While working within the justice sector of a United Nations mission in Mogadishu, he had planned to buy beer after attending a fellowship where he had preached.

“On this particular Sunday, I was coming back from the Fellowship where I had preached, and I was just hoping to buy two canned Heineken and go to my room and read my Bible,” he said. “There were many restaurants in the UN compound in Mogadishu. So, I went to this particular restaurant, and as I walked in, I saw many of my colleagues from different countries. They were drinking.”

He recalled noticing an unusual reaction from his colleagues, who quickly concealed their drinks on seeing him. Curious, he approached one of them, a Danish colleague, to ask why.

“You are the priest, and we can not be drinking around the priest.”

The response, he explained, struck him deeply and prompted a moment of reflection about his conduct and beliefs. He said the encounter helped him understand the meaning of “All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient,” describing it as a turning point.

Osinbajo added that he has not taken alcohol since that day.

The video has since generated mixed reactions across social media platforms, with some viewers describing the account as amusing and relatable, while others weighed in on his public persona and political past.
