Nollywood actress Laide Bakare has apologised publicly after a video of her admitting she introduced her teenage daughter, Similoluwa, to clubbing and alcohol sparked outrage online.
In a recent interview that went viral, the actress had proudly stated that she personally took her daughter to a nightclub for the first time and also gave her her first taste of alcohol.
“In fact, I’m the first person that will bring her to a club. That was her first club experience ever. And I like the fact that, in her memory, her very first alcoholic drink and clubbing was through me,” Laide said in the clip.
The statement drew heavy criticism from fans and parents, who accused the actress of promoting irresponsible parenting and exposing her child to underage drinking.
However, Laide later retracted her statement in a video posted online Sunday evening, saying her words were taken out of context and were a “slip of tongue.”
“I didn’t know I said it. The video was sent to me where I said it, but it was a slip of tongue. Such never happened,” she said.
“I didn’t introduce her to alcohol at all. I will never do that. The little girl, Simi, felt bad as well. She doesn’t like to be portrayed as a teenager who abuses alcohol.”
The actress expressed regret over the controversy, apologising to her daughter and to parents who were offended by her earlier remark.
“I am using this video to say sorry, Simi. Sorry to all parents who felt disappointed. Please forgive me for the blunder,” she added.
