UCL: Newcastle held PSG to draw, both to face playoff

Newcastle United held Paris Saint-Germain to a 1-1 draw in their final Champions League league-phase match, sending both clubs into the play-off round.

The result at the Parc des Princes on January 28 left PSG and Newcastle outside the top eight, meaning neither side secured automatic qualification for the last 16.

PSG took the lead early through Vitinha, who fired in from the edge of the box. Newcastle responded just before half-time, with Joe Willock heading home after a flick-on from Dan Burn.

The hosts had a chance to go ahead inside the opening minute when Lewis Miley was penalised for handball. However, Nick Pope saved Ousmane Dembele’s penalty to keep Newcastle level.

PSG dominated possession for long spells but were slowed by the first-half injury to Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. Newcastle remained organised and threatened on the break in the second half through Anthony Gordon and substitute Harvey Barnes.

“It’s hard to swallow. We did everything to finish in the top eight but couldn’t take our chances,” Vitinha said.

The draw leaves PSG 11th and Newcastle 12th, both on 14 points.

PSG will now face either Monaco or Qarabag in the play-offs, with Newcastle drawn against the remaining team.

“We gave everything to try and make the top eight,” Newcastle manager Eddie Howe said. “PSG are an outstanding team, so this is a good result for us.”

The Champions League play-off draw will take place on Friday.
