Top NHL prospect, Gavin McKenna, charged with felony assault

Top NHL prospect Gavin McKenna has been charged with felony assault following an alleged altercation in Pennsylvania.

McKenna, an 18-year-old Canadian and a freshman at Penn State University, was arraigned this week in State College.

According to court documents obtained by the BBC, he faces felony aggravated assault, misdemeanour simple assault, and two summary charges of harassment and disorderly conduct.

State College Police said the incident happened on 31 January around 8:45 p.m. in the 100 block of South Pugh Street.

“It is alleged that McKenna struck a 21-year-old male in the face during the altercation resulting in facial injuries requiring corrective surgery,” police said.

Penn State’s student newspaper, The Daily Collegian, reported that the alleged victim “lost a tooth in the altercation and had his jaw wired shut,” citing the criminal complaint.

McKenna was released after posting $20,000 (£14,770) bail.

Penn State Athletics said it is aware of the case but will not comment further.

“We are aware that charges have been filed; however, as this is an ongoing legal matter, we will not have any further comment,” a spokesperson said, according to ESPN and Sports Illustrated.

McKenna is widely projected to be the first overall pick in the NHL Draft expected to take place in June in Buffalo, New York.

His preliminary court hearing is scheduled for 11 February at the Centre County Courthouse in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania.
