No entry: US to shut doors against corrupt Nigerian officials

The United States (US) Government has announced plans to shut doors on corrupt Nigerian government officials saying, they risk being barred from entering the country.

In a statement posted on its official X handle on Monday, the US Mission in Nigeria said the fight against corruption knows no borders, stressing that even high-profile figures could be denied visas if found wanting.

“Fighting corruption knows no borders or limits on accountability. Even when high-profile individuals engage in corruption, they can be barred from receiving US visas,” the Mission stated.

The US reiterated its commitment to supporting Nigeria’s anti-graft campaign, noting that visa restrictions remain one of the measures used to promote good governance and accountability in partner nations.

Washington has in the past imposed travel bans on politicians accused of electoral malpractice and attempts to undermine democratic processes.

The latest warning comes amid renewed concerns by transparency advocates over alleged mismanagement of public funds and abuse of office at various levels of government in Nigeria.

The US stressed that denying entry to corrupt officials aligns with its broader strategy of strengthening the rule of law and entrenching accountability.
