Nigeria flags off West Africa’s first robotic surgery platform

Nigeria has officially launched West Africa’s first robotic surgery platform at Nisa Premier Hospital in Abuja. Named ‘Toumai’, meaning “Hope of Life,” the system marks a milestone in the country’s healthcare development.

The initiative is a collaboration between Nisa Medical Group and Robomed Global of the United States, aimed at improving surgical precision and patient safety in specialties such as urology, gynecology, and surgical oncology.

“This is the dawn of a new era of surgical innovation and clinical excellence in the region,” said Winifred Ebiye, Corporate Communications Officer at Robomed Global USA.

The platform is not just a technological upgrade; it is designed to train Nigerian and African surgeons, nurses, and biomedical engineers in minimally invasive robotic procedures. Dr. Obi Ekwenna, CEO of Robomed, explained, “This milestone strengthens Nigeria’s healthcare capacity and equips African surgeons to deliver world-class care.”

Dr. Ibrahim Wada of Nisa Medical Group added, “This partnership positions Nigeria as a hub for advanced surgery, creates skilled jobs, and reduces the need for medical tourism.”

With ‘Toumai,’ Nigeria becomes a regional leader in robotic-assisted surgeries, setting the stage for a new standard of healthcare excellence in West Africa.
