The Nigerian government has called for a full investigation into the sudden death of Abubakar Lawal, a Nigerian footballer who played for Vipers SC in Uganda. Lawal, 29, reportedly fell from the third floor of the Voicemall Shopping Arcade in Kampala on February 24, 2025. Initially, reports suggested he died in a road accident. However, Ugandan police later confirmed he fell from the building, raising serious concerns about the circumstances.
As news of his passing spread, shock and grief gripped the Nigerian football community. The Professional Footballers Association of Nigeria (PFAN) quickly described the death as “questionable” and insisted on a transparent inquiry. Speaking on the matter, PFAN President Tijani Babangida said, “The reports are conflicting. We need a full investigation to uncover the truth.”
Before his tragic passing, Lawal was known for his speed and technical ability. He played for Wikki Tourists in the Nigerian Professional Football League before moving to Uganda. After joining Vipers SC in 2023, he became a key player. Unfortunately, his sudden death has left fans, teammates, and family members heartbroken.
In response, the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has urged Ugandan authorities to prioritize the investigation. A spokesperson from the ministry stated, “We demand answers. His family and the football world deserve to know the truth.” Meanwhile, the Nigerian High Commission in Uganda has been in contact with local officials to ensure a transparent and thorough process.
On the other hand, Ugandan police have provided some details about the ongoing investigation. According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango, officers found Lawal’s body outside the shopping arcade. He explained, “Investigations will determine if this was an accident, suicide, or foul play.” As part of the process, authorities are now reviewing CCTV footage and collecting witness accounts to establish what truly happened.
Meanwhile, Lawal’s club, Vipers SC, has expressed deep sorrow over his passing. In an official statement, the club described him as “a dedicated professional and an important part of our squad.” Furthermore, his teammates remain in shock, with some questioning how such a tragic event could have occurred.
Beyond the immediate grief, football analysts believe Lawal’s case highlights the need for stronger player welfare policies. Former Nigerian international Victor Ikpeba weighed in, saying, “This is a sad day for African football. Our players need better care and protection when playing abroad.”
As the investigation continues, the Nigerian government has assured Lawal’s family of its commitment to seeking justice. Additionally, the Ministry of Sports has pledged support for the grieving family. “We will follow this case closely and push for justice,” a spokesperson confirmed.
