MTN Nigeria to compensate subscribers after service disruptions

Nigeria’s largest telecom operator, MTN Nigeria, has announced plans to compensate subscribers affected by recent service disruptions, following a directive from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

In a statement, the company said the decision reflects its focus on customers, noting that the NCC directive shows the regulator’s effort to prioritise consumers in the telecom sector.

MTN said customers in areas where disruptions were recorded will receive compensation for November, December and January, in line with regulatory provisions.

“MTN Nigeria exists to connect Nigerians to the digital world, and we believe that every subscriber deserves a reliable, high-quality network experience,” the company said, while acknowledging the inconvenience caused by the service issues.

The company also said it is increasing investment in its network to reduce future disruptions. It plans to expand its capital expenditure to improve service quality across the country.

According to the statement, this will include upgrading infrastructure with new equipment to increase network capacity and meet growing demand for data and voice services. MTN added that it is also working to strengthen its systems against environmental challenges and external disruptions.

The telecom firm said it is working more closely with tower infrastructure providers to ensure that telecom facilities meet required standards for smooth service delivery.

While asking for customers’ understanding, the company said some disruptions are caused by factors beyond its control, including infrastructure challenges and external interference.

MTN said it will continue to work with the NCC, tower companies and security agencies to address these issues and improve service reliability.

“We will continue to invest heavily for the long-term to sustainably power Nigeria’s digital economy for generations to come,” the statement added.

The development comes as regulators increase oversight of telecom operators, pushing for better service standards and stronger consumer protection in Nigeria’s growing digital sector.
