Messi signs new Inter Miami deal, Argentine star to stay in MLS till 2028

Lionel Messi will remain at Inter Miami, signing a contract extension that keeps the Argentine superstar in Major League Soccer (MLS) through the end of the 2028 season, the club confirmed.

The 38-year-old signed the deal at the under-construction Freedom Park stadium in Miami, with Inter Miami posting a video on X captioned: “He’s Home.” Messi said in a club statement: “It makes me really happy to stay here and to continue with this project that, besides being a dream, has become a beautiful reality. Since I arrived in Miami, I’ve been very happy, so I’m truly glad to keep going here.”

Inter Miami co-owner David Beckham praised Messi’s decision, calling it a reflection of his “commitment to the city, to the club, to the game.” Beckham added, “He’s still as committed as he’s ever been and he still wants to win. We feel very lucky to have a player who inspires the next generation of young talent.”

Messi’s new contract ensures he will remain active through and beyond the 2026 World Cup, hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The deal comes after a transformative period in MLS, where Messi has driven record attendances, ticket revenues, and global attention. MLS Commissioner Don Garber said, “When Lionel Messi made MLS his league of choice, it marked a turning point – not just for Inter Miami, but for our entire sport in North America.”

Since moving to Inter Miami in 2023 from Paris Saint-Germain, Messi has continued to shine. He finished the 2025 season with 29 goals in 28 matches, claimed the Golden Boot, and led Miami back into the playoffs. He also became the fastest player in MLS history to reach 40 goals.
