Man bound for Nicaragua ends up in Tokyo after boarding wrong flight

A United Airlines passenger travelling from Los Angeles to Managua, Nicaragua, was left stunned after mistakenly boarding the wrong aircraft and landing in Tokyo, Japan, instead of his intended destination.

The unidentified traveller was scheduled to fly from Los Angeles with a stopover in Houston before continuing to Managua. However, he boarded an incorrect connecting flight and only realised the error when the journey, expected to last about three hours, stretched to six hours.

According to a report by The Traveler, the passenger alerted a flight attendant after noticing the unusually long flight time, but the aircraft was already en route to Japan. He eventually arrived at Haneda Airport in Tokyo, more than 8,000 miles away from where he was supposed to be.

Airport ground staff and immigration officials handled the situation on arrival, while the passenger remained on board during initial procedures. His original ticket to Managua reportedly cost $655.

The man was accommodated in a Tokyo hotel for two nights while United Airlines arranged onward travel to Nicaragua.

Reacting to the incident, a spokesperson for United Airlines said the company had contacted the passenger to apologise and had offered compensation, including travel credits and reimbursement for expenses incurred.

“We followed up with the airport to understand how this happened, reached out directly to the customer to apologise for his experience and offered travel credits and reimbursement,” the spokesperson said.

United initially provided $300 in travel credit but later increased the amount to $1,000 after public criticism over the passenger’s additional costs, including hotel accommodation and essential purchases.

The airline also reminded travellers to pay close attention to boarding announcements and gate displays to ensure they are boarding the correct flight.

A similar mix-up was recorded in 2017 when a non-English-speaking passenger flew from Newark to San Francisco instead of Paris following a last-minute gate change, underscoring the need for passengers to verify flight details before boarding.
