JUST IN: Ebonyi Catholic bishop passes away at 60

The Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki has announced the death of its Bishop, Most Reverend Peter Nworie Chukwu, who passed away at the age of 60.

The bishop died just under four years after he was ordained as the Bishop of the diocese on August 19, 2021, at St. Theresa’s Cathedral, Abakaliki.

He succeeded Bishop Michael Okoro as the third bishop, following his ordination by Pope Francis on July 6, 2021.

The late bishop was from Umuezekoha in Ezza North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

Fr. Donatus Chukwu, the Vicar General, confirmed the bishop’s death on behalf of the diocese in a statement he signed and released to the public on Saturday.

He stated that the bishop died on Friday, April 10, and called on the general public to remember the bishop and the diocese in their prayers, noting that funeral arrangements would be announced later.

The statement reads: “NOTIFICATION OF THE DEATH OF MOST REVEREND PETER NWORIE CHUKWU, CATHOLIC BISHOP OF ABAKALIKI DIOCESE.

“With profound sorrow in our hearts, and trusting in the divine mercy of God, I write to notify you that our beloved bishop, Most Reverend Peter Nworie CHUKWU, Bishop of Abakaliki Diocese, has returned to the Father’s house. Bishop CHUKWU died on Friday, April 10, 2026. He was aged 60 years.

“Most Rev. Dr Peter Nworie Chukwu was born on November 5, 1965, ordained a priest on July 3, 1993, consecrated and installed as the 3rd bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki on August 19, 2021.

“Please keep the Bishop and the Diocese in your prayers. Funeral arrangements will be announced later.

“May the soul of Bishop Peter Nworie CHUKWU and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.”
