Insecurity: NLC mobilises workers for nationwide protest

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has begun mobilising workers and affiliate unions across the country for a nationwide protest over worsening insecurity.

The planned NLC nationwide protest is aimed at pressing the federal and state governments to take urgent and sustained action against rising cases of kidnapping, killings and other violent crimes affecting Nigerians.

The congress said the protest, tagged a peaceful rally, will be held simultaneously across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. In Abuja, workers and civil society groups are expected to converge at the Labour House in the Central Business District as early as 7:30 a.m.

Acting General Secretary of the NLC, Benson Upah, said the decision followed resolutions reached by the union’s National Executive Council after reviewing the country’s security situation. He noted that workers could no longer remain silent while insecurity continues to threaten lives and livelihoods.

According to Upah, the NLC nationwide protest is intended to demand decisive action from authorities, including improved security coordination and protection for citizens in both urban and rural communities.

He added that the congress has mapped out designated routes for the protest to ensure it remains orderly and peaceful, stressing that labour unions and civil society allies are committed to conducting the rally without disruption.

Upah said the labour movement believes sustained public pressure through the NLC nationwide protest is necessary to compel the government to prioritise security and restore public confidence.
