The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed claims that its chairman endorsed a partisan post on social media platform X, describing the allegation as false and misleading.
In a statement issued on Friday, the commission said the report was part of a “malicious and coordinated campaign” aimed at undermining its credibility.
INEC clarified that its chairman does not operate any personal account on X and has never engaged in partisan commentary.
“The allegation is entirely baseless, a total fabrication, and a figment of the imagination of its purveyors,” the statement said.
The commission described the viral post as a deliberate attempt to question the neutrality of the electoral body at a critical time.
It also raised concerns about cybercriminals impersonating the chairman online to defraud unsuspecting Nigerians.

“We are aware that fake social media accounts are being used in the chairman’s name. These have been identified and reported to security agencies,” the commission noted.
INEC assured that it is working closely with security agencies to track and prosecute those responsible for the impersonation and spread of misinformation.
It warned that identity theft and the circulation of fake digital content are criminal offences under Nigeria’s Cybercrimes Act.
The commission urged Nigerians to disregard the false claims and rely only on verified official channels for accurate information.
INEC reaffirmed its commitment to conducting credible elections, stating that it remains focused on its mandate despite attempts to discredit it.
