I can change Nigeria in four years — Peter Obi

Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, says he can transform Nigeria within four years if elected in the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking on Channels Television on Wednesday, the former Anambra State governor confirmed he would contest and urged Nigerians to prioritise competence and integrity in choosing their next leader.

“I am contesting, and I am sure I will be on the ballot,” Obi said. “People will have to look at who has the capacity and who can deliver. I believe I am qualified and capable. In four years, I can change the trajectory of Nigeria to a positive one.”

Obi reaffirmed his loyalty to the Labour Party but noted that he is also working with other opposition figures under a coalition linked to the African Democratic Congress.

He dismissed speculation about rejoining the Peoples Democratic Party, saying the focus should be on rescuing the country, not political manoeuvring.

The former governor urged politicians to focus on tackling poverty rather than switching parties ahead of the presidential election, lamenting that over 139 million Nigerians live in poverty.

Reacting to recent defections to the ruling APC, Obi described them as personal choices, stressing that democracy thrives on persuasion, not coercion.

As preparations continue for the 2027 presidential election, Obi said his mission is to provide credible leadership that will restore hope and rebuild the nation.
