How ‘they’ plan to rig 2027 election – Atiku

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has raised the alarm over what he described as a calculated plot to rig 2027 election, accusing the National Assembly , particularly the Senate,  of deliberately stalling amendments to the Electoral Act to pave the way for another compromised poll.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate in the 2023 election said unresolved loopholes in the Electoral Act 2022 were the same channels through which the last general election was, in his words, “brazenly rigged,” warning that failure to close those gaps could once again rig 2027 election.

In a statement issued on Thursday, January 22, 2026, Atiku argued that defects in the current law not only undermined the credibility of the 2023 polls but also weakened the ability of petitioners to secure justice at the election tribunals.

He accused federal lawmakers of intentionally frustrating the reform process.

“It is imperative that if the mistakes of the 2023 election are to be corrected, the legal instrument for the conduct of the 2027 and subsequent elections must be urgently reviewed,” Atiku said.

“But as things stand, it has become obvious that the Senate is determined to frustrate the passage of amendments to the 2022 Electoral Act.”

Atiku further said a recent investigative report by the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) had exposed the dangers of legislative inaction, describing it as both an indictment of the Senate and a warning that failure to act could rig 2027 election long before voting day.

According to him, the fate of the 2027 polls is now being decided, not at the ballot box, but on the floor of the National Assembly.

“The credibility of the 2027 general elections hinges on the urgency with which the Senate treats this crucial bill,” he warned.

The former vice-president concluded with a blunt charge that has already stirred political debate.

“It is, therefore, imperative that the Senate finalises the amendments and ensures the updated law governs the conduct of the 2027 elections. Anything short of this is a deliberate attempt to rig 2027 election long before the ballots are cast.”
