Ghana: MTN to suspend airtime, data sales for 4 hours on January 2 over new VAT tariffs

MTN Ghana has announced a temporary suspension of airtime and data bundle purchases on January 2, 2026, as it prepares its systems for the implementation of new Value Added Tax (VAT) tariffs.

In a notice to customers, the telecommunications company said a scheduled maintenance will take place from 12:00am to 4:00am on the day. During the four-hour window, all airtime and data purchase channels will be unavailable.

According to MTN, the system upgrade is necessary to align its billing and sales platforms with the revised VAT regime recently announced by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

The company noted that customers who rely on late-night or early-morning recharges may experience inconvenience, but did not indicate whether other services such as voice calls, mobile money transactions, or the use of existing data bundles would be affected.

MTN Ghana apologised for the disruption and thanked customers for their understanding, signing off the notice with its slogan, “everywhere you go.”

Subscribers have been advised to purchase any needed airtime or data bundles ahead of the midnight start of the maintenance to avoid service disruption.
