A Nigerian woman, Meerah Abdul, has caused a stir online after saying her husband must pay her monthly during pregnancy and while breastfeeding.
In a social media post, Abdul said Islamic teachings support financial support for women during pregnancy and breastfeeding. She argued the work should not be done for free.
“As a Muslim lady, my husband will have to pay me monthly for breastfeeding our child and even while I’m pregnant,” she wrote.
She also questioned why women are expected to breastfeed without compensation.
“If you like, don’t collect the milk. Why should you breastfeed for free? Are you being paid or compensated in any way?” she asked.

Her post drew mixed reactions online.
Some agreed, saying women deserve support. Others said breastfeeding should come from love, not money.
@omah_sila warned breastfeeding can be painful and said women may end up “begging to breastfeed for free.”
@stylishdutch said she got no payment and had to “beg the child to suck it” because her milk was too much.
@ib_ailen joked, “Thank you for the tip. Make I dey jot things down wait my husband.”
The debate continues as people argue over whether breastfeeding is a duty or a service.
