Champions League: Liverpool’s nightmare continues, thrashed 4-1 by PSV at Anfield

Liverpool’s Champions League woes deepened on Wednesday as PSV Eindhoven ran out 4-1 winners at Anfield, leaving fans frustrated from the opening minutes. PSV goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili’s early ball control drew audible groans from supporters, setting the tone for a night of misery.

The damage began in the sixth minute when captain Virgil van Dijk conceded a penalty, converted by Ivan Perisic. Van Dijk, normally a defensive anchor, struggled and picked up a first-half yellow card. Liverpool briefly responded when Dominik Szoboszlai scored after Cody Gakpo’s shot was saved, but PSV regained control after halftime as Mauro Júnior set up Guus Til. Ibrahima Konaté’s error allowed Couhaib Driouech to make it 3-1, with the forward adding a stoppage-time goal.

Reflecting on the result, manager Arne Slot admitted: “I think it’s a shock for everyone… But in the end of the game I did see that it affected maybe one or two players that we were 3-1 and 4-1 down.”

On his own future, Slot added: “I’m not worried… My focus is on other things than worrying about my own position. I try to analyze, try to help the players as much as I can… I need to do better, and that’s what I’m trying to do every single day to improve the team.”

As the final whistle blew, PSV fans mocked the departing Anfield crowd with “Always Look on the Bright Side of Life,” underscoring Liverpool’s ongoing crisis and the urgent need to restore belief in the squad.
