BREAKING: Nigerian Military confirms coup plot, set to court-martial suspects

Nigeria’s Armed Forces have completed investigations into 16 officers arrested for breaches of military regulations, with some facing court-martial proceedings that include allegations of plotting to overthrow the government.

 

Major-General Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information, announced the conclusion of the investigations in a statement issued on Monday in Abuja.

 

The officers were initially arrested in October 2025, as announced by Defence Headquarters at the time. The investigations followed established military procedures and regulations.

According to Maj.-Gen. Uba, investigators examined all circumstances surrounding the officers’ conduct and determined that several have cases to answer.

 

“Accordingly, officers found to have cases to answer will be formally arraigned before appropriate military judicial panels to face trial in line with the Armed Forces Act and other applicable service regulations,” he said.

The charges include allegations of plotting to overthrow the government—actions Uba described as inconsistent with the ethics, values, and professional standards expected of Armed Forces members.

 

The defence spokesperson clarified that the measures are disciplinary actions and part of internal institutional mechanisms designed to maintain discipline, cohesion, and operational effectiveness within military ranks.

 

He stressed the Armed Forces’ commitment to professionalism, loyalt,y and constitutional authority, assuring the public that due process and fairness would guide the proceedings throughout.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​
