Nigeria’s national electricity grid has collapsed again, plunging several parts of the country into darkness and marking the second system collapse recorded in 2026.
The latest collapse occurred minutes ago on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, according to power sector monitoring data, with electricity supply to distribution companies dropping sharply across the country.
This development comes weeks after the first national grid collapse recorded earlier in January 2026, when power generation fell drastically and supply was cut nationwide, forcing distribution companies to shut down feeders and leaving millions of consumers without electricity.
The repeated failures have renewed concerns over the stability of the country’s power infrastructure, particularly as Nigerians are still grappling with frequent outages.

The situation follows a turbulent 2025, during which the national grid reportedly collapsed multiple times. Industry reports and media records indicate that the grid suffered several total and partial collapses throughout 2025, with the final major incident occurring in late December, barely days before the start of the new year.
Although the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has in the past disputed some collapse reports, attributing them to line trippings, power sector observers say the repeated disruptions continue to expose deep-seated challenges in generation, transmission and grid management.
As of the time of filing this report, efforts to restore supply are ongoing, while officials are yet to issue an official statement explaining the cause of the latest collapse.
