Aproko doctor warns against fake ‘cryptic pregnancy’ scam in Nigeria

Aproko doctor has raised alarm over a growing scam called “cryptic pregnancy,” which tricks women into believing they are pregnant.

Dr. Chinonso Egemba, popularly known as Aproko Doctor, explained that fraudsters posing as medical experts inject women with hormones to mimic pregnancy symptoms such as weight gain and vomiting. The women are then told not to do proper scans. After months, they are drugged during “delivery” and handed babies believed to have been trafficked.

“There’s a pregnancy scam going on. If there’s truly a pregnancy, it will show on an ultrasound scan,” he warned in a post on X. “They pump women with drugs, tell them not to do scans, then give them a stolen baby. It’s a criminal racket.”

The warning followed a viral testimony shared by ex-BBNaija star Bambam, who claimed a woman in her church carried a pregnancy for three years and four months.

Reacting, another doctor, Olusina Ajidahun (The Bearded Dr. Sina), dismissed the story as part of the scam. He said such women are often restricted to one hospital, injected with hormones, and later deceived with stolen babies.

The scheme has also been exposed by a BBC Africa Eye investigation, which revealed facilities where victims including teenagers, were kept in poor conditions, with some children trafficked.
